Description of the material

The Dressing Challenge is a dressing duel with signs and ball cards that turns getting dressed for sports into a competition between two teams. As soon as all the children on a team are dressed, the last child brings the “Finished!” sign into the sports hall, so the teacher can see which team is ready. The faster team gets a ball for its collection sign and can request a game for a sports lesson once it has collected enough balls. This makes the dressing time more structured in a playful way.

What is included in the material

  • Handout with the dressing duel procedure and tips for the teacher
  • “Finished!” signs for the changing rooms with “Finished!” or “We are dressed,” illustrated with children or gym bags in red and yellow
  • Collection signs with empty spaces for the balls, titled “Dressing Duel,” “Dressing Challenge,” “Dressing Queens” or “Dressing Kings”
  • Ball cards with various balls to attach to the collection signs
  • “Dressing Record” and “Dressing Time” signs with empty spaces in the style of a timer
  • Beige and blue version of all signs and cards, in addition to the basic grey version

Tips for using the material

  • Teams: The class can compete as Team Red and Team Yellow, for example; for separate girls’ and boys’ teams, the “Dressing Queens” and “Dressing Kings” collection signs are suitable.
  • Game request: You can decide in advance how many balls a team needs to collect to get its requested game.
  • Clear rules: It is recommended to explain the dressing duel clearly and run it regularly in the same way.
  • Suitable classes: The duel is particularly suitable for classes where getting dressed often takes a long time.

These skills are promoted

  • Fairness in the competition between the teams
  • Dressing quickly, encouraged by the competition between the teams

Organizational tips

Each team receives a collection sign, and a “Finished!” sign is placed in each changing room. The balls can be attached to the collection sign using hook-and-loop dots, for example.

Additional material for sports lessons: the Dressing Check, the secret child as a reward system and cards on rules and rituals in sports lessons.
