Description of the material

In this running game for physical education, teams collect puzzle pieces with summer motifs in a relay race and assemble them to form a picture. While one person from each team runs off, retrieves a piece, and tags the next person upon returning, the others can start assembling the puzzle in the starting area. The team that completes its puzzle first shouts “Stop!” and wins.

What is included

  • Game description with procedure, rules, and variations
  • Picture puzzles with summer motifs as templates for the puzzle pieces
  • Second version of the puzzles with a white background

Tips for using the material

  • Play against the clock: The game can also be scored so that after five minutes, the team that has assembled the most pieces wins.
  • Dribble a ball: The players can also dribble a ball on their way.
  • Other ways of moving: Instead of running, a different way of moving can be specified, for example, backwards or crab walking.

These skills are promoted

  • Running speed when retrieving the puzzle pieces in the relay race
  • Combining and keen observation when assembling the pictures
  • Teamwork, because the runners and the puzzle assemblers work together to complete the picture
  • Coordination when dribbling and when using specified ways of moving

Organizational notes

Two to four teams line up in rows behind the starting line. The puzzle pieces are placed on the ground or on a box about fifteen to twenty meters away. In addition to the puzzle pieces, cones and bibs are needed; a game lasts about five to ten minutes.

The puzzle race is also available as a Spring Edition and as a Carnival Edition; another summer game is the Memory Relay with Summer Picture Cards.
