Description of the material

In the walking dictation, children practice zoo animals in primary school English class. They sneak over to word cards displayed around the classroom, memorize an English animal name, and write it correctly at their desks.

What is included in the material

  • Word cards: zoo and wild animals from elephant to bison, each with a picture and English name
  • Worksheets: animal pictures with writing lines for recording the words next to the corresponding image, in two versions with ruled and plain lines
  • Instructions: procedure and rules of the walking dictation in German

Tips for using the material

  • It is useful to first select the vocabulary to be practiced and hang only these cards in different places around the classroom.
  • A common starting signal from the teacher is helpful; after writing down a word, the children move on to the next card.
  • It is recommended to agree on clear rules beforehand: no copying, no speaking or reading aloud, and everyone works at their own pace.
  • It may be useful to end the exercise only when all children have written down all the words.

These skills are promoted

  • Vocabulary: read English animal names and match them to the corresponding picture
  • Spelling: write English words correctly from memory
  • Memory: memorize a word and retain it on the way back to their desk

To complement this, there is a worksheet for writing the same words, vocabulary cards for learning the spelling, and a mini-test to check learning after practicing.
