Description of the material

The Smalltalk Game is a board game for primary school students, where learners talk about zoo animals in English. They playfully practice English vocabulary related to Zoo Animals and get to know each other. The questions on the spaces revolve around favorite animals, personal zoo visits, as well as the appearance and behavior of animals – from the tiger's fur to the penguin in its enclosure.

What is included in the material

  • Game board: a path from start to finish with English question spaces and action spaces to skip, move forward, or go back
  • Game instructions: the course of play and the goal of the game briefly explained

Tips for using the material

  • Two or more people can team up for the game.
  • It is recommended to place all game pieces on the start space and take turns rolling the dice: Whoever lands on a space with a question or task answers the question or carries out the task, after that it is the next person's turn. The person who reaches the "END" space first wins.

These skills are promoted

  • Speaking: talking about personal experiences and preferences in English and justifying answers
  • Vocabulary: naming zoo animals and their characteristics, such as fur, scales, teeth, and colors
  • Reading comprehension: reading and understanding English questions on the game board

Organizational notes

To play, one die and one game piece per person are needed.

To match, there are the same conversation questions as cards, a speaking game on the same vocabulary, and riddle cards for describing zoo animals.
