Description of the material

With the Smalltalk Cards, learners talk about zoo animals in primary school English lessons and share their own experiences at the zoo. Taking turns, they draw a card from the face-down pile and answer the question on it, for example about their favorite animal at the zoo or animals that can swim well. The questions focus on the animals' appearance, behavior, and habitats, and invite learners to freely use vocabulary they have already learned.

What is included in the material

  • Smalltalk cards, each with an English question about zoo animals and zoo visits
  • A short set of instructions in German explaining how the cards work and how to use them

Tips for using the material

  • The cards are recommended as a warm-up for a lesson to encourage learners to speak.
  • Pairs or small groups can be formed to work with the cards.

The following skills are promoted

  • Free speaking: answering spontaneously in English and formulating your own answers
  • Vocabulary: using and expanding vocabulary related to zoo animals, their appearance, and their behavior
  • Reading comprehension: reading and understanding the English questions on the cards
  • Listening: following the answers of others during pair or group work

To complement this, there are the same conversation questions as a board game, riddle cards for describing zoo animals, and a speaking game using the same vocabulary.
