Description of the material

Using the Cootie Catcher, children make a paper snatcher and use it to name zoo animals in English together, from polar bear to crocodile. This helps them playfully reinforce their vocabulary for Zoo Animals in primary school English lessons.

What is included in the material

  • Game instructions: explain how the partner game with the paper snatcher works.
  • Folding instructions: show step by step how to make the paper snatcher from the square template.
  • Crafting templates: square templates with numbered pictures of zoo animals, one set with the English animal names and one set with pictures only.

Tips for using the material

  • It is recommended to form pairs after crafting: One child says a number, and the other moves the paper snatcher back and forth and left and right with their thumb and index finger that many times.
  • The templates with animal names include a self-checking feature: The first child chooses one of the visible numbers, names the animal behind it in English, and flips up the picture, where the correct answer is written underneath.
  • It is a good idea to switch roles and start a new round afterwards.

These skills are promoted

  • Vocabulary: English names of zoo animals such as zebra, penguin, or kangaroo
  • Speaking: naming animals in the partner game according to the pictures
  • Self-checking: checking your own answer by flipping up the picture
  • Fine motor skills: folding and moving the paper snatcher with the thumb and index finger

Organizational notes

The templates can also be printed on DIN A3 instead of DIN A4 so that the pictures are larger and easier to recognize.

To complement this, there is another folding template for vocabulary, a partner game with the same vocabulary, and word and picture cards to introduce the words before the game.
