Zoo Animals / Zoo Animals: Bingo for the English Classroom

In this bingo game, children review zoo animals in primary school English lessons. The bingo cards show only pictures of animals: the children listen to an English animal name and look for the corresponding picture on their card. Familiar zoo animals such as the elephant, hippopotamus and meerkat are included.

What is included

• Instructions explaining how to play and a quick version for reading aloud
• Vocabulary cards to draw, each with an English animal name and picture
• Bingo cards with animal pictures in two grid sizes, 3x3 and 4x4

Tips for using the material

• It is recommended that one child comes to the front, draws a vocabulary card from the bag and reads the word aloud. The others listen carefully and cross off the square if the animal is on their card.
• It is helpful to clarify the winning rule beforehand: whoever has completely crossed off a row, column or diagonal shouts “Bingo!” as quickly as possible – once all the squares have been correctly crossed off, the child has won.
• For a quick round, the game leader can also read the words directly from the sheet with the vocabulary cards without cutting them out; the children then cross off the squares.

• Vocabulary: English names of zoo animals such as giraffe, hippopotamus or rhinoceros
• Listening comprehension: recognizing spoken animal names and matching them to the corresponding picture
• Reading aloud: reading individual English words aloud when drawing the cards

Organizational tips

The vocabulary cards, preferably laminated, go into a bag; each child receives a bingo card.
