Description of the material

Working in pairs, children use this Cootie Catcher to quiz each other on English number words. To do this, they fold a paper fortune teller with colored numbers hidden under its flaps. This allows them to playfully expand and reinforce their vocabulary for Numbers in primary school English lessons.

What is included in the material

  • Game instructions outlining the procedure for pairs
  • Folding instructions in numbered steps, showing how to make the paper fortune teller from the square template
  • Craft templates with colored numbers and the corresponding English number words, divided into the number ranges zero to seven, eight to fifteen, and sixteen to twenty-three
  • The same craft templates as a second option, with the numbers but without the English number words

Tips for using the material

  • It is useful to first make the paper fortune tellers and then form pairs.
  • To start, one child can say a number between one and ten; the other moves the paper fortune teller back and forth and left and right with their thumb and index finger the corresponding number of times and stops at the chosen number.
  • It is helpful to then have them choose one of the four visible numbers on the flaps: the first child says the number that is shown underneath and opens it up to check.
  • It is recommended to switch roles after each round so that both children take turns asking and answering.

These skills are promoted

  • Vocabulary: orally say and reinforce the English number word for the numbers shown from zero to twenty-three
  • Self-monitoring: check their own answer by opening the flap
  • Fine motor skills: folding and moving the paper fortune teller with the thumb and index finger

Organizational notes

The templates can also be printed on DIN A3 instead of DIN A4 so that the numbers are larger and easier to see.

To complement this, there is another partner game for number words, another craft template for numbers, and word and picture cards for introducing number words.
