Description of the material

The Smalltalk Game is a board game for English lessons in which children roll dice, move around the board, and answer questions about cleaning and tidying up in English. For example, they are asked how often they tidy their rooms, whether they have ever cleaned windows, or what they would clean first if they had magic powers.

The following materials are included

  • Game board with 25 spaces between “Start” and “End”: English questions and a short task about cleaning, as well as spaces where the game piece skips a turn or moves two spaces forward or backward
  • Game instructions in German explaining the rules: take turns rolling the dice and moving, answer or perform the question or task on the space; the first person to reach the finish line wins

The following skills are promoted

  • Speaking: talking about their own cleaning and tidying habits in English
  • Vocabulary: using words such as vacuum, mop, ironing, wardrobe, or washing-up liquid in context
  • Reading comprehension: reading and understanding English questions and tasks on the game board

Organizational notes

The game can be played by two or more people; a die and a game piece for each person are required.

On the topic of cleaning, there are also the Smalltalk Cards, the party game Don’t say it!, and the Vocabulary Cards.
