Description of the material

This Matching Circle is a matching circle activity about animals from the Arctic and Antarctic for English lessons, in which the children match English words such as orca, walrus or arctic fox to the corresponding picture and a short description. Because each description is a first-person sentence, such as “I have white fur and I am very clever.”, the children read to figure out which term is meant.

This is included in the material

  • Matching circle variant 1 with 12 pieces consisting of an English word, picture and short first-person sentence about animals from the Arctic and Antarctic and a snowflake, plus a central piece “Arctic & Antarctic”
  • Matching circle variant 2 with the same 12 terms, but only consisting of a word and picture, also with a central piece
  • Instructions with a short explanation of the matching circle method and the procedure

Tips for using the material

  • Layout: The cards can be laid out randomly on the floor or on a large table, so that the children first have to search for the matching pieces and combine them into complete sets.
  • Social forms: The matching circle can be completed individually, in pairs or in small groups.
  • Discussion: Once all connections have been checked, it is a good idea to discuss the completed matching circle together.

These skills are promoted

  • Vocabulary: English names of polar animals such as walrus, moose or puffin
  • Reading comprehension: reading short English first-person sentences and matching them to the corresponding word and picture

On the same topic, there is also a puzzle, a Reading Domino, What am I Cards and Clip Cards.
