Description of the material

In this explanation game you will find concept cards for Farm Animals for English in Primary School – from cow and goat to barn, haystack or scarecrow. The children can describe a term in English without using the forbidden words on the card, while their team guesses the word being sought.

This is included in the material

  • Concept cards of animals, people, buildings and objects from the farm, each with a picture, the English word being sought and the forbidden words
  • Game instructions in German with preparation, procedure and rules

Tips for using the material

  • Play in teams: The class can compete in two to three teams; one member from the team whose turn it is comes to the front and explains the term.
  • Explanation rules: In addition to the forbidden words, gestures, variations of the word and translations are not allowed when explaining.
  • One-minute rounds: If the team guesses the word before time runs out, they get a point; after that, the other team can take over.
  • Set the number of rounds: It is advisable to decide in advance how many rounds will be played; at the end, the team with the most points wins.

These competencies are promoted

  • Vocabulary related to the farm, which is applied and expanded when explaining and guessing
  • Free speaking in English by describing terms without translation
  • Listening comprehension when guessing the English descriptions of your own team
  • Creative thinking when looking for other words when the obvious ones are forbidden

Organizational notes

Before the game, the cards are printed, cut out and laminated if necessary.

To complement this, there is a team guessing game with drawing instead of explaining, cards on which English descriptions of words from the farm are guessed, and a conversation game on the same topic.
