Description of the material

Don’t say it! is an explanation game in which learners describe English autumn words such as hedgehog, chestnut or raincoat without using the three forbidden words on the card. For pumpkin, for example, autumn, Halloween and orange are forbidden, and gestures, variations of the word and translations are also not allowed.

This is included in the material

  • 36 game cards, each with a picture, an English autumn term and three forbidden English words
  • Game instructions in German, explaining the course and scoring of the game

Tips for using the material

  • In teams: The class can play in 2 to 3 teams, with one team member coming to the front and describing the term while their own team guesses.
  • With a time limit: If the team guesses the word before time runs out, it gets a point, and after one minute, it is the other team's turn.
  • Number of rounds: The number of rounds can be decided in advance, and at the end, the team with the most points wins.

These skills are promoted

  • Vocabulary: English words related to autumn, from animals such as fox and snail to fruit and vegetables such as pear and carrot
  • Speaking: freely paraphrasing terms in English
  • Listening comprehension: recognizing the sought term from an English description

Organizational notes

Before the game, the cards are printed, cut out and laminated if necessary.

In addition to the English autumn words, there is also a Drawing Game, What am I? Cards and a Reading Domino.
