Description of the material
Match! is a card game for English lessons that helps children review English words related to the Arctic and Antarctic, such as polar bear, penguin, igloo, and dog sled. Two cards always share the same picture, and the first person to spot and name it wins the card. The player who has collected the most cards at the end wins.
What is included
- 31 playing cards, each featuring six pictures of varying sizes
- Game instructions with setup and two game variants
- Instruction card with a summary of the rules and a title card in card format
- Double-sided card backs for double-sided printing
- Vocabulary overview featuring all 31 English words and their pictures
Tips for using the material
- With a game leader (Variant 1): One person shuffles the cards, places one face up in the middle, and flips over a second card from the face-down pile on the count of three; the first person to name the matching picture wins the card that has been in the middle for longer.
- Without a game leader: Variant 1 can also be played with the participants flipping over the second card one after another.
- All at once (Variant 2): Each person receives a face-down card, and the remaining cards form an open pile. On the count of three, everyone flips over their card; the first person to name the match with the top card of the pile places it face up on their own card. The game continues until the pile is empty.
- In the event of a tie, a duel can decide the winner: both players flip over a card from their own pile at the same time, and the first person to call out the matching symbol wins.
The following skills are promoted
- Vocabulary: 31 English words for animals, clothing, and objects from the Arctic and Antarctic, such as moose, puffin, winter jacket, and icicle, are reviewed as the pictures are named
- Close observation and quick reactions, as the matching picture must be searched for on two cards and recognized first
Organizational notes
The cards can be printed on thicker paper or with a back, and laminated after cutting them out; the game can be played in groups of two to six around a table, where everyone can clearly see the pile in the middle.
On the same topic, there is also a Memo Game, an Education Lotto, the game Floppi, and Word and Picture Cards.
